It’s already December 23. If you’re anything like me (and apparently the thousands of other people testing my patience at retail stores this weekend), you thought you would have much more time to shop for Christmas gifts for your friends and family. So you waited until the weekend before the big day only to fight to the death with the rest of the people, at every single store, who did the exact same thing.
Well, no fear! We’ve compiled a list of awesome tech items for the loved ones in your life. It’s probably too late to purchase these items online and have them to your doorstep by Christmas morning, but hey, at least it can give you an idea of what you’re looking for so you can laser focus your attention when braving the crowded malls for the next two days. Let’s take a look at what we found:
Touch screens are great. Nearly everyone you know has one nowadays; they’re just everywhere! But during the cold winter months, your mittens keep you from texting, tweeting, Facebooking, and doing whatever else it is you do on your phone when you’re trying to avoid awkward eye contact with strangers on buses or waiting for what seems like hours for your name to be called at the doctor’s. Quirky’s got the perfect thing for this: “Digits.” These are small, finger-tip sized pins that you can insert into your favorite pair of mittens so you can text away while keeping your phalanges nice and toasty.
2. POLAROID Z2300 INSTANT DIGITAL CAMERA
The Polaroid Z2300 is great for all ages. Older generations will enjoy its nostalgic feel and the sheer “vintage-ness” of it is sure to reel in the teens and young adults who live by Instagram, Snap Chat, and Vine. The photos it prints are even of similar quality to the old school Polaroid pics, so they will add an artistic touch to your frames at home. It’s a bit pricier than the last gift, but at $198.00, it’s sure to make the amateur photographer in your life pretty happy on Christmas morning.
3. ROKU 3
Television just ain’t like it used to be. Nowadays, we aren’t content with just a regular old TV set; it’s got to have access to Internet, your computer, and popular services like Hulu and Netflix. The Roku 3 box brings all of this and more to your living room. It gives HDTVs access to over 1000 channels (including Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Video) and it comes with a free app for your iOS or Android that turns your phone into a remote. This thing can do pretty much anything you could want, except cook your Christmas dinner for you so you can go back to using it some more.
4. GOOGLE CHROMECAST
On a similar, yet cheaper note, is Google Chromecast. I’m sure you’ve heard everyone talking about this this Christmas. It’s on pretty much everyone’s list so if you’re not sure what to get someone, this is a pretty good bet. For only $35, this thing does a lot; it’s a small dongle that plugs into your TV’s USB port and gives you access to Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, Google Music, and HBO Go using your smartphones as a remote. It doesn’t have as many bells and whistles as the Roku, but it’s still pretty great for someone who watches Netflix more than cable TV.
5. FITBIT FLEX WIRELESS ACTIVITY & SLEEP WRISTBAND
Again, if you’re anything like me, one of your favorite activities is curling up on your couch with a good cup of tea, watching your favorite TV show and playing with your cat. But for those of you out there who enjoy a more active lifestyle or have loved ones who do, the Fitbit Flex is a great gift. It’s small, it’s cute, it comes in 4 different colors, and it tracks things like how many steps you take, the distance you go, and how many calories you’ve burned throughout the day. And at night it tracks your sleep quality. It even lets you sync your data wirelessly to your tablet or smartphone, so you can set goals for yourself and get healthy in a high-tech, organized and stylish way.
6. PHILIPS HUE CONNECTED BULB
Now this bad boy is pretty awesome. It’s not just your average, run-of-the-mill light bulb that only comes in one boring setting and makes you get up to turn it on and off. No, sir. The Philips Hue Bulb does all kinds of things. It has a timer that automatically turns it on to wake you up in the morning — and none of those shockingly white bright lights that attack your eyes. You can set Hue to gently brighten over time to make it seem as though you are waking up to a beautiful sunrise. It hooks up to your smartphone so the color in any photo becomes a palette that Hue can reflect. And everything is remote, so you can control your lights at home, even if you are away. Heck, if you have the urge to send me over a Christmas gift, this will do just fine.
This lego compatible Brickcase is great for kids and kids at heart. It comes in versions for the iPad Mini, iPhone 5/5S, iPhone 4/4S, and iPod Touch, and there are a bunch of different colors to choose from. It has all of the things you look for in a smartphone or tablet case, plus the added benefit of awesomeness. Legos sold separately!
8. UTILITY CHARGE TOOL
Fred Flare has all sorts of strange things you can purchase — one of them is this Swiss army knife-style USB charger. It can charge iPhones, iPods, Nokias and more, and HTC products. All you need to do is plug the main USB into your computer and voila! You’ve got a charge. And it’s sure to be a conversation starter.
9. PARROT FLOWER POWER
The Parrot Flower Power is a wireless Bluetooth device that when inserted into the soil of a plant, tells your smartphone all kinds of botanical things. It reports soil moisture, fertilizer, temperature, and light intensity so you know exactly what your plant needs for a healthy life. If you’ve got an avid gardener in your life, they will thank you for this device!
10. IZEN BAMBOO BLUETOOTH KEYBOARD
For your eco-friendly pals, the iZen Bamboo Keyboard is renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable. It’s also pretty stylish as well and it works with all of your wireless devices, including your Smart TV. It works the exact same way as a regular wireless keyboard, but it’s sure to catch the attention of anyone who walks by.
11. MIPOW POWER TUBE SHAKE 2600
The MiPow Power Tube Shake is small, colorful, and strong. It comes with a bunch of connector cables so you can use it with your iPhone, Blackberry, HTC, Samsung, LG…you name it! The Shake features LED lights that tell you how much charge you have left, and to activate them, you simply shake the device. It’s perfect for your friends and family who are always on the go — they can charge their devices from anywhere!
12. SONY SMARTWATCH
Now you can finally have one of those awesome watches that your childhood heroes had. It might not do quite the same things as Inspector Gadget’s or the Power Rangers’, but it still makes you feel like a superhero. The SmartWatch discreetly notifies you when you receive a call, text, or other notification and features a handy touchscreen. You can access a variety of apps and play your music from it as well. You can even choose between analog and digital clock faces and multiple bands to fit your style.
13. IPICO HANDHELD PROJECTOR
This thing just sounds awesome. It’s a handheld projector that plugs into your iPod or iPhone and projects up to a 50” image. Paired with a set of speakers, it’s great for parties, camping trips, or casual movie nights on the lawn. If you’ve got a wall and an iPhone, you’re pretty much set. And you don’t just have to watch movies and TV shows with it — you can project a photo slideshow for special events! For $80, it’s a pretty handy little device.
14. MICHAEL KORS CLUTCH FOR IPAD MINI
This is a great gift for the techie fashionista in your life (it’s also on my list!). As always, Michael Kors has delivered an adorable and totally chic envelope-style case that fits your iPad Mini and turns heads. It also works as a wallet and secures open to prop your iPad up for watching movies or funny YouTube videos.
15. INSTAGRAM PRINTS
If you want to go the more personal route, turn your friend’s Instagram photos into a work of art! On a website like Prinstagram, you can upload Instagram photos and turn them into vintage Polaroid prints, posters, photo books, calendars, or really anything you can think of. This is a great way to make a truly one-of-a-kind, personalized gift.
That’s it! Hopefully this list gave you some ideas for gifts that will make your friends and family giddy when they wake up Wednesday morning. So stop procrastinating! Get out there and brave the crowds before Christmas. There’s not much time left!
